Arts for Life was created in 2001 to provide arts experiences for seriously ill children, at first in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and later in hospitals across the state. Through programs in writing, visual arts, and music, the lives of children and their families are enriched and, as you will recognize in the paintings and words on the CD, children are able to deal with hospitalization by exercising their creativity and “escaping to a world where you only have fun” as Luis writes in the last song on the CD.
This recording project had its beginnings in 2009 when Becca Stevens wrote “Trapped Orca in an Aquarium” using a poem she found on the Arts for Life website. Response to the song, both from people who knew of Arts for Life and people who had never heard of the organization, was so strong that before long there was discussion of a collaborative composing project using poetry written by Arts for Life children.
Becca and her brother, composer and recording engineer William R. Stevens, contacted their friends in North Carolina and New York City to see if there was interest in joining the effort. They were overwhelmed by how many composers and musicians were willing to donate so much time and creative energy, but the support didn’t stop there. The CD was made possible through the generosity of patrons, by free time provided by recording studios in North Carolina and New York , with the encouragement and support of the Arts for Life staff and board, and most of all by the children in Arts for life and their families who show us all the power of art to inspire, to change, and to hear.
